Under the pressure of an increasing number of variants, smaller lot sizes and shorter product life cycles many companies are constrained to adapt their production con-tinuously at the needs of the environment. More and more companies react on these needs with the introduction of a Lean production system. This requires a change of view in the assembly and the planning of assembly systems. The article describes a method to determine the fundamental criteria for the design and the construction of flexible and lean assembly systems.
