Uffici is a series of wooden task chairs (with accompanying acoustic panels and tables), the backs of which frame an extended panel of double-layered mesh (or a colourful gradated weave) that moulds around a sitter’s body to offer support. It is a strikingly alien aesthetic. While the frame of Uffici is somehow nostalgic (the first task chairs were wooden), it nonetheless creates a context in which the woven mesh – a familiar material from many office chairs – appears experimental. Rather than the technical component that mesh is in more heavy-duty office chairs, the mesh in Uffici generates a similar feeling to Nike’s Flyknit or Addidas’s Primeknit construction: a high-end technology made approachable. “The world of sneakers is something we’re looking at,” says Cohen. “Can we bring that to the office with wood and those qualities? We have the potential for textiles in any environment, but they're underestimated and underused. The potential is far greater than what we take it for. In the design industry everybody is doing everything they can to do the new thing, but they all use fabrics sourced from one and a half suppliers.” Uffici is primarily a response to changing work habits. "The idea of a home office is almost a cliche, but what is a home office?” says Cohen. "There are so many specialists creating incredible office machines and systems – Herman Miller, Vitra – but for me in my studio, or for Disegno in its, I don’t know if those would suit the needs those companies have. What I’m interested in is something I call the soft office. It’s not a hardcore office, it’s a softer one, so it’s self-explanatory as a term. But there’s still a question as to what a soft office would be and what you need for one. Uffici is the start of all that.” t would be difficult to think of a more apt description for Uffici. “This is a chair with the same technology and fibre as Primeknit,” says Cohen. “It’s the same thing and the same world, because it’s made for the same people. These are people who are now going to their offices in that kind of shoe, which is playing with conventions. But when great technologies offer themselves, why not follow that path?”en_US
