CFD modelling of forced convection at a building component surface and coupling to dynamic HAM simulation: Assessment and evaluation of methods and accuracy

This paper utilizes computational fluid dynamics and heat, air, and moisture modeling to enhance the quality of results for the case study of forced convection through an air cavity. Different turbulence models and near-wall modeling techniques were combined and a mesh sensitivity study was conducted to ensure numerical correctness. The results are evaluated and discussed regarding their application to HAM simulation. Different approaches for the CFD input to HAM modeling are assessed and a comparison of numerical HAM results with laboratory measurements is performed. Results reveal that the number of wall surface subdivisions should be determined dependent on the CHTC course to achieve most accurate numerical representation of heat flux measurements.
