The space of the exhibition as a field of action

Why do we organise architecture exhibitions? What do we exhibit when we show architecture? What are the aspects related to the built realm that are worth exhibiting and how is the space of an architecture show organised in order to generate communication? What are some relevant examples of architecture exhibitions enacting practices that take a distance from the conventional form of the show and provide the public with a different way of engaging with the issues of the exhibition? Is the architecture exhibition merely the presentation of substitutes for buildings that cannot be moved or can it be something more? These questions relate to the issues addressed in a research project carried at the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free university of Bozen Bolzano and collected in the publication „Displayed Spaces. New Means of Architecture Representation through Exhibitions“. Being the peculiarity of this kind of show the fact that the architecture exhibition is space showing space, in this text I focus on the added value represented by the diffusion of knowledge about architecture or, in a broader way, the diffusion of an idea 'of' or 'on' architecture through this tool.
