Sustainability indicators for the knowledge-based society: measuring the sustainability of the information society
MetadataShow full item record
When politically discussing the knowledge-based society, it is most frequently dealt with from a technology supply perspective. However, although this transformation of industrialsocieties will not be possible without ICTs, it will in turn influence the kind of ICT used, the way it is produced, used and disposed of. The resulting changes in the communicationstructure and infrastructure will have repercussions for the strive towards a sustainablesociety: they will positively or negatively influence the worldwide increase of resource useand environmental changes, the economic performance and the social cohesion. These effects are partly recognised and discussed, but there are no generally accepted visions, nor means to measure the progress towards a sustainable knowledge society or the absence of it, and in particular the influence of ICT in respect to sustainabledevelopment. This paper outlines some essentials of a knowledge society with respect to sustainabledevelopment, and suggests a preliminary set of indicators to monitor this process.
