What makes up a ‚good‘ kindergarten from the point of view of kindergarten children? An explanatory study, executed with the documentary method, reconstructed quality dimensions on the basis of video-based group discussions, discussions accompanying drawing sessions, photo-based tours of the kindergarten and participating and video-based observation. Children want their basic needs for belonging, experiencing competence and autonomy to be fulfilled. They want to feel bound safely to persons of reference, belonging to a social community and embedded in reliable rituals. Children are eager and passionate users of interesting learning and educational opportunities; they have a great and energetic need for the exploration and acquisition of the world. Children want to participate and co-determine actively and responsibly in the design of the places they live in. They appreciate adults that respect them in their “freedom” and “equality” and who display “solidarity” towards them. Through the participation in democratic principles, children feel valued and respected.
