- Additional Description
- description: 100 Years of Hermann Zapf in occasion of the 100th anniversary of Hermann Zapf - 2018 The research project «100 Years of Hermann Zapf» stands in the field of tension of practice-oriented teaching and Action Research. The project represents, therefore, an experimental-design and reflective practice research. Experimental Poster Design uses a «visual language» for those areas of our lives where our «normal language» does not extend. By bringing things or thoughts into new, surprising or irritating contexts, the mind is inspired and enriched beyond purely practical and functional experience. Experimental Poster Design is therefore always a refined adventure, to grasp our world. In the field of design education for typography and visual communication, an Experimental Poster Design is an appealing field for action research and dissemination. For the scientific community of the communication designers, a Poster exhibition is an inspiring tool in knowledge-building and knowledge-sharing. The goal of the research project «100 Years of Hermann Zapf» was to use an Action Research approach to give different access and new understandings of the remarkable life's work of the German type designer and calligrapher Hermann Zapf. The project experiment with practice-oriented teaching methods. The Action Research was processed together with the students of the 1st-semester foundation course in visual communication (WUP-VK), of the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano Italy. The project is routed in the unibz Design Faculty research cluster ENABLE. The Faculties foundation course in visual communication (WUP-VK) is a continuous playground for research in design education, where new forms of transitional experience in typography and communication design are brought into practice. The students designed an experiential Poster exhibition of 100 posters. All the 100 posters play with the initials H & Z. The black posters (H) are screen printed the white posters (Z) are digitally printed. The project reflects Hermann Zapf's work in the field of tension between «Calligraphy Art» and the «Digital Revolution» and was designed with modulated halftone screens. Each poster bears in the «Header» a narration concept that illustrates a facet of Hermann Zapf's life.
