- description: "Family matters, or: what counts is family." This is the motto of an exhibition realized by Munich-based product designer Nitzan Cohen for Die Neue Sammlung. The family firm Mattiazzi in Udine has been well known for its highly sophisticated technical processing of wood – be it manually or industrially using CNC machines – for a long time. Brothers Nevio and Fabiano Mattiazzi founded the firm in 1979. Originally they solely worked as suppliers to other firms, but since 2009 Nitzan Cohen (born 1973 in Israel) and Berlin-based art director Florian Lambl (born 1977 in Munich) have been shaping the concept for the firm’s reorientation, forging its own new and independent path. An “extended family” of internationally renowned designers such as Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic, Jasper Morrison, Sam Hecht and Nitzan Cohen himself develop furniture designs for Mattiazzi that bring the firm’s specific knowhow to bear. This means that despite the individuality of the designs, the result is not a haphazard hodgepodge of solitary pieces, but a family of products with a kindred creative approach. After Die Neue Sammlung recently acquired a group of these pieces of furniture for its collection, the museum has now invited Nitzan Cohen to curate a selection, including additional pieces, in the entrance area of the permanent design exhibition. An exhibition by Die Neue Sammlung – The International Design Museum Munich – in cooperation with Studio Nitzan Cohen, Lambl / Homburger and Mattiazzi within the context of MCBW – Munich Creative Business Week 2015.
