Abstract
This book, titled DesignClassics: A Handpicked Selection of Iconic Design Objects, presents a comprehensive teaching and research initiative in design history that merges academic rigor with creative practice. Spanning the years 2016 to 2024, the project facilitated the exploration and documentation of over 700 iconic design objects drawn from various disciplines and domains.
Central to the project is its emphasis on combining historical research with artistic expression through manual drawing techniques. Students undertook extensive research to identify and analyze significant design classics, producing meticulous hand-drawn illustrations as part of their assignments. These works were further enriched by contributions from the author, whose expertise and ongoing research in the field of design history informed the selection, curation, and editorial refinement of the collection.
Moreover, this project bridges research and teaching by producing teaching materials and fostering interdisciplinary engagement in the context of design history. By intertwining research-driven insights with pedagogical practices, the initiative highlights the value of collaborative learning and the integration of diverse perspectives within the design field.
The resulting collection represents a unique pedagogical approach that integrates visual communication, critical thinking, and historical inquiry. It stands as both an educational tool and a research archive, offering insights into the legacy of design objects while fostering a deeper appreciation for their cultural and historical significance. This publication showcases the collaborative efforts in celebrating iconic design while emphasizing the author’s pivotal role in preserving and interpreting design heritage for future generations.
