Abstract
The CD Come Lord, South African choral music, Vol II is a culmination of years of building an instrument (i.e. a choir). It is also the audible representation of a ten-year period in which the candidate researched repertoire, vocal styles and the characteristics of the choral art, and then the specifics of the particular instrument. Each work chosen for the programme displays a long and thorough thought process in order to represent a segment of the South African sacred choral music repertoire, approached from a Western perspective.
The entire repertoire that was chosen for this production was sacred in nature. Two commissioned cycles were included. The two cycles, both by the Pretoria composer Niel van der Watt, are:
i. Job -cycle
ii. Griekwa-psalms
Although the CD Come Lord production represents only a portion of what South African choral music has to offer, it is hoped that the broader public, nationally and internationally, will be stimulated to explore further facets.
