Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the classifications of Ladin dialects. The classification of Ladin dialects has been characterised by two main aspects: a) the discussion around the autonomous position of Ladin within the Romance languages; b) the discussion around the area to be considered as Ladin. The most important classification proposals are outlined, starting with these undertaken by G. I. Ascoli and Th. Gartner in the last quarter of the 19th century up to the dialectometric classifications that emerged about a century later. The most relevant methodological difference that can be noticed is between dominant qualitative and dominant quantitative approaches and procedures.
