Abstract

Giglioli Enrico Hillyer Photo collection Network Evolutionism Anthropology Ethnography
The present article aims at analysing the photographic practices of Enrico Hillyer Giglioli (1845-1909), a naturalist and anthropologist active in the Italian community flourishing around the Museo di Antropologia e Etnologia in Florence. Giglioli related to photography in multiple ways, making up an impressive photographic collection dedicated to human types and drafting handbooks for travellers. His case will help to illuminate issues related to the evidentiary value attached to photography, the role of archival practices in the production of anthropological knowledge, and the use and circulation of pictures across different contexts.
