Abstract
Giovanni Gentile’s Liceo originates from a very specific idea: a development path centered on classical Western culture. The most important Italian mathematicians of the last hundred years have come from this school. Retracing the history of this idea, with its strong ideological assumptions and its limitations, the article frames the experience of "Mathematical Liceo" that has been developing in recent years.
Il Liceo di Giovanni Gentile nasce da una idea ben precisa: un percorso di formazione centrato sulla cultura classica occidentale. Da questa scuola sono usciti i più importanti matematici italiani degli ultimi cent’anni. Ripercorrendo la storia di questa idea, con i suoi forti presupposti ideologici e i suoi limiti, l’articolo arriva a inquadrare l’esperienza di “Liceo Matematico” che si sta sviluppando in questi anni.
