Abstract
Nella prima parte di questo contributo teorico discuto la rilevanza della dimensione formativa del dolore e – alla luce della distinzione fra dolore fisico, psicologico e morale, e della suddivisione del problema del dolore in due momenti (il problema della sofferenza e il problema del male) – osservo come l’esperienza del dolore fisico sia relativamente poco indagata in ambito pedagogico. Nella seconda parte dell’articolo prendo in esame l’analisi del dolore fisico proposta dal filosofo Emmanuel Lévinas nel testo Il Tempo e l’Altro. Considero poi brevemente, tenendo conto della riflessione filosofica matura di Lévinas, la questione della sofferenza per la sofferenza altrui, che costituisce un’apertura all’etica della responsabilità. Nelle conclusioni mostro quale contributo possano fornire alla pedagogia queste analisi e osservazioni filosofiche. La tesi che sostengo è che dall’esperienza del dolore fisico si possano aprire spiragli di possibilità e di speranza: compito della pedagogia è aiutare a rendere questi spiragli forme di crescita.
In this theoretical contribution I start by discussing the relevance of the educational dimension of pain and—in the light of the distinction between physical, psychological, and moral pain, and the division of the problem of pain into two parts (the problem of suffering and the problem of evil)—I note that the experience of physical pain is not well investigated in the educational field. In the second part of this article, I examine the analysis of physical pain proposed by the philosopher Emmanuel Levinas in his text, Time and the Other. I then briefly consider, taking into account Levinas’ mature philosophical thinking, the question of suffering for the suffering of the Other, which constitutes an opening into the ethical perspective of responsibility. I conclude by showing how these philosophical analyses and observations can provide a contribution to education. My thesis is that the experience of physical pain can open up glimmers of possibility and hope: the role of education is to help turn these glimmers into shapes of growth.
