Abstract
Disasters, whether natural or man-made, have always drastically changed our cities. COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly changed mobility behavior in many cities, while some cities have not learned much from the pandemic. Some city dwellers changed behavior by avoiding public transport as a common means of transport, and instead, they shifted to cycling, walking, and private car usage.
This article first analyses the impacts of the pandemic on mobility in terms of public transport and private transport in general, and then we show the case of urban mobility in Beirut and how it was affected by the dire economic situation and pandemic. This paper presents the general innovative measures taken and the local adaptive methods and strategies applied to cope with the new change. Finally, specific ideas are concluded on how the pandemic and crises could be used as an opportunity for sustainable urban mobility.
