Abstract
The upcoming US presidential elections in 2024 have global implications and are characterized by concerns about the development of the USA and democracy. For Europe and global development, these elections are particularly relevant for three reasons: the direct elections to the European Parliament, the unity or divergence of the Atlantic pillars of democracy, and the outcome of the Ukraine war. The chances for various scenarios depend on the strong polarization and growing inequality between the coasts and the inland areas of the USA. The two candidates, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, represent different political currents and stand for a deep division in American society. There is speculation that Michelle Obama could emerge as a surprise candidate, while Condoleezza Rice is mentioned as a possible candidate for the Republicans. It is difficult to predict the outcome of the election, but currently, according to an expert, Biden has better chances. It is emphasized that the USA will continue to struggle with internal and external conflicts after the election.
