Abstract
The distribution of the rowan, occurring as two subspecies in Central Europe (Sorbus aucuparia subsp. aucuparia and S. aucuparia subsp. glabrata), and the site conditions of its common habitats are described. The occurrence and relative frequency in different forest and shrubby plant communities are shown with examples from southern and north-eastern Germany. The rowan can be part of the tree layer of white woodrush/beech forests (Luzulo-Fagetum) in the upper montane belts. Ecological characteristics and ground vegetation of these rowan/beech forests are described, with examples from stands in the Thuringian Forest (Central Germany). Other examples are also given of forests and shrubby communities with rowan as an element of the tree layer in the upper montane to the subalpine regions of Central Europe. Based on the data given, suggestions are made for preserving and developing the remnants of the rowan/beech forests in the Thuringian Forest. It is especially suggested that spruce [Picea] plantations should be avoided.
