Abstract
Community music, as an innovative orientation in the theory and practice of music for social change, is slowly gaining popularity in Italy. Nonetheless, it is still largely unknown, both as a theory, as a term and as a concept for practice. As a result, it has been insufficiently researched: there is little evidence of research specifically concerned with the theory and practice of community music in Italy. Research into the pedagogical, social and cultural context, the development of inclusion, integration and social change is still in its infancy in Italy. There are, in fact, many Italian experiences that can be traced back to the theories and practices of community music: The Italian model develops individual skills and abilities in borderline educational contexts that have great significance for the co-construction and enrichment of individual and social identity.
