Abstract
The flood wave characteristic originating from of a dam break is of basic relevance for the extent and impact of flood wave propagation and the issue of evacuation plans. By applying 3D numerical simulations with the FLOW-3D software, the effects of various failure modes, failure rates, reservoir sizes and shapes of reservoirs on the outflow hydrograph are analysed. Within the present study, specific focus is put on the potential failure mechanisms at concrete dams. It can be noted that the assumption of a sudden failure for the determination of the maximum outflow is sufficiently accurate. With regard to a conservative assessment of the available evacuation times, this represents an important finding.
