Abstract
LED technology has been historically used for light indicators and low heat quantity production. The introduction of high power LED with warm white and monochromatic lights led to a productive specialization with regards to lighting applications in general. High power light emitting diodes offer a great efficiency in terms of brightness and high energy, which permits LED advent in the illuminating engineering at the expense of other lighting devices. If an incandescent lamp has a lighting power that varies from 10-15 lumen per watt and a fluorescent lamp can reach a maximum of 90, LED exceeds 120- 130. This tendency has brought to a new, relevant phase in this field all over the world. Economic researchers and operators ask themselves about the strategic answers which companies can use to solve problems related to the new competitive scenario and assure the development of this field. Through an accurate analysis of time series of data related to international LED and other lighting devices trade, this work shows that light emitting diodes will surely become the main lighting technology of the future and a great opportunity for import- export companies in this field.
