Abstract
Gasification is one of the potential pathways which can be applied in order to convert biomass into energy [1]. It could be defined as a process which converts feedstock with relative high carbon content into gas, by means of high temperature and sub-stoichiometric addition of air and oxygen or using water steam [2]. Unlike combustion - which releases energy and hot exhaust gases - gasification “packs” energy into chemical bonds, upgrading the inlet feedstock into an intermediate fuel called producer gas [3]. There are various types and designs of gasifiers with different characteristics and operating parameters. As a result, different gasifiers are suitable for feedstock having different characteristics, or for different designed plant capacities. The basic reactor typologies are fixed bed (updraft or downdraft), fluidized bed and entrained flow. Nonetheless, the downdraft technology is the most common for small scale biomass gasification.
