Abstract

Workforce Development Educational reform Curriculum Development Engineering Education
This study examines engineering education in African Higher Education Institutions (AHEIs), focusing on teaching methods and alignment with local needs and industry demands. An online survey among engineering educators across AHEIs gathered insights into teaching strategies and areas for improvement. Findings reveal challenges including inadequate industry collaboration, limited access to laboratories and equipment, insufficient funding, and lack of modern technologies. These factors create a disconnect between theoretical instruction and practical application, resulting in graduates lacking skills to address region-specific challenges. The study highlights the need for curriculum reform, innovative teaching strategies, and policy interventions to enhance engineering education quality in Africa. Key opportunities include strengthening industry-academia partnerships, promoting entrepreneurship ecosystems, and providing integrated support in human, technical, financial, and strategic areas. The integration of sustainable development principles into engineering education is emphasized to foster innovation and achieve long-term impact. The study contributes to efforts to transform engineering education in Africa and build a skilled, innovative engineering workforce across the continent.
