Abstract

This essay takes a practical viewpoint - that of a graphic designer, a creator of visual messages that assembles text and images in a single product - and examines case studies in which the type becomes an image using different methods depending on the context in which it is employed. The historical considerations are an opportunity to highlight how every graphic designer is required to develop their own personal approach to the text/image relationship, which is necessarily influenced by the period and the technologies used but also defined by their own personal creativity and graphical style, by their specific skills and expertise, as well as by the goals of the message.

Additional Description: description: Il rapporto tra testo e immagine è stato ampiamente indagato. Da un punto di vista artistico, attraverso la produzione di elaborati in cui il limite tra lo statuto dell’immagine e quello del testo è stato messo a dura prova con finalità diversissime attraverso i secoli . Più di recente, nell’ambito degli studi sul segno e in particolare nel lavoro di studiosi e progettisti che propongono e operano all’interno di una definizione di scrittura inclusiva, che non considera soltanto la forma del segno, ma anche le relazioni che intercorrono tra diversi segni nello spazio . Sulla base di queste esperienze, il presente testo assume un punto di vista pratico — quello del progettista grafico, produttore di messaggi visivi che assembla testo e immagini in un unico artefatto — rivolto a casi studio dove la tipografia diventa immagine, con differenti modalità a seconda del contesto in cui essa è utilizzata. L’excursus storico è un’occasione per evidenziare come ogni progettista grafico è chiamato a sviluppare un approccio personale al rapporto testo/immagine che risente necessariamente dei tempi e delle tecnologie utilizzate, ma che non si esaurisce in esse, in quanto definito anche sulla base di una poetica personale e di un linguaggio grafico autoriale, di competenze specifiche e professionalità, nonché delle finalità del messaggio.
