Abstract
This paper presents a conceptual discussion which investigates challenges regarding the design for changeability in future automotive manufacturing. Two aspects will be discussed: What will be the competences and technologies on manufacturing level needed in the future to cope with the challenge of integration completely new components or module in traditional automotive assembly plants? The second aspect will treat the necessity of transformation of existing automotive supplier networks and manufacturing competences. The scope of this paper is to start a broader academic discussion amongst AITEM especially to identify the contributions that Italian engineering research might give to sustainably develop the future competitiveness of Italian automotive and automotive supplier industry.
