Abstract
This paper is part of the PV IMPACT project funded by the EU H2020 program. The main objective is
to shed light on the research and development funding for photovoltaics (PV) by analysing funding from public (European Commission and national budgets) and private sources so to get detailed understanding of past R&I expenditures for the PV sector and related research topics, current level and potential future trends. The countries under scope are the EU27+UK, Norway and Turkey. Climate and energy related targets should be met by 2030, so keeping track of investments in a field that enables technology innovation is an important effort as PV will play a major role in the coming decade. The CORDIS database provides ample data on H2020 projects, allowing the compilation of relevant information. As of December 2020, a total of ~360 M EUR have been distributed for PV R&D since 2014. A large amount of these funds (~194 M EUR, equivalent to 54% of the whole funds) are destined for the sole purpose of improving PV module efficiency. At Member States level, leveraging on the availability of national databases, it is possible to define on which areas of the SET-PLAN each Member State is investing most.
