Abstract

Adaptable Robot cognitive response Enhancing Theory of Mind in HRI Internal state monitoring in HRI Mutual affective understanding Robot-assisted Cognitive Training
This paper presents ongoing activities of the RESTART project (Robot Enhanced Social Abilities based on Theory of Mind for Acceptance of Robots in Assistive Treatments). RESTART introduces a groundbreaking approach to human-robot interaction by enhancing robot-human communication through social and cognitive abilities driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI). By integrating theory of mind and mutual understanding concepts, the project aims to improve the acceptability of robots, especially in assistance scenarios. Informed by the European Commission’s focus on human-centric AI technologies, RESTART addresses the limitations of traditional robotic systems, which often lack adaptability and overlook crucial cognitive and emotional factors. The project proposes a bidirectional proactive communication model, enabling robots to interpret human behaviors and emotions while facilitating human understanding of the robot’s intentions. Through this innovative approach, RESTART seeks to redefine the design of interactive human-robot systems, advancing the development of socially acceptable robotic assistants across various domains.
