Bio-intelligence in manufacturing integrates biological principles and advanced computational techniques to enhance industrial processes. This interdisciplinary approach is based on already known principles like biomimicry, bio-sensing, and bio-based materials with the aim to further innovate and optimize industrial production by combining manufacturing and biology / biotechnology. Although there is a raising interest in research, it is not yet clear where and how bio-intelligence will have practical implications for manufacturing enterprises. In this work we use systematic literature review methodology to identify and analyze the current status quo of scientific literature related to biointelligent manufacturing. A main result of this work was to deduce potential applications, their suitability for small and medium sized enterprises (SME) and to highlight still existing challenges such as scalability, integration with existing systems, and economic viability.
