Abstract
The complexity of architectural design is increasing due to environmental and energy issues and to social‐economic changes. Architectural design requires integrated approach to perform complex analysis and to define the appropriate solution. Several parameters have to be considered from the early phase of the process and this makes hard the decision‐making process. Moreover planning decisions made in this phase determine almost entirely quality, performances, costs and sustainability of the project. Although rational and systematic approaches developed in other design fields are available to guarantee the effectiveness of the design process, architectural design rarely acquires these systems. Axiomatic Design, as one of these systems, is distinguished from other design methods by the utilization of axioms. They are general principles that guide toward good design decisions. This approach can be applied to all situations to solve design problems through basic principles of analysis and ecisionmaking, to evaluate the synthesized idea or to select only good ideas from several plausible designs. An analysis and classification of the applications of Axiomatic Design approach to the design of architectural systems is conducted. This study intends to be continued for the future development of strategies and a systems framework that support the understanding and achievement of architectural design concepts in efficient and effective ways.
