Abstract
Ecological connectivity helps counteracting negative effects of habitat fragmentation and climate change. Therefore, the connection of the two mountain ranges, the Alps and the Dinaric mountains which are rich in biodiversity, must be preserved and improved. Eleven partners from seven countries worked to strengthen transnational cooperation to improve ecological connectivity throughout Dinaric Mountains connecting them with the Alps. The presentation depicts the main problems, research questions and objectives for an ecological network in the Dinaric Alps. It shows the GIS analysis of the landscape permeability between the Alps and Dinarci mountains through a GIS model, using the Continuum Suitability Index. The presentation shows the macro-regional connection, the most important barriers on it and gives recommendations for priority intervention measures to restore and maintain the macro-regional and regional connections.
