Abstract

Ancient dental calculus has been shown to contain genetic information on the human ancestral oral microbiome. We aimed to analyze ancient calculus samples with modern de novo metagenomic assembly techniques to increase the knowledge of the complex microbial oral flora and its diversity over time, with a particular focus on the periodontitis-associated genus Methanobrevibacter.
