Abstract

South Tyrol
South Tyrol, an autonomous province in the North of Italy, is often cited as a model of peaceful conflict resolution, and its German and Ladin language groups are said to be among the “best protected in the world”. This chapter reviews the history of the autonomy in South Tyrol, which ranges from conflict to complex power-sharing arrangements based on consociationalism, territorial and cultural autonomy and discusses the province’s global connectedness and recent challenges.
