Abstract

Our sensory and cognitive systems are the product of millions of years of evolution of human and pre-human ancestors. The success of these ancestors – like the success of all organisms – is a measure of the degree to which they were adapted to their environment. This chapter will discuss these adaptations and their relevance for us today, in the context of our relationship with our natural and artificial surroundings.
