Abstract
The Italian general election of September 2022 witnessed the heralded success of Fratelli d’Italia, the party considered the heir to the neo-fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano. This result has a particular significance in South Tyrol, a province with a sophisticated political autonomy implemented to protect its German- and Ladin-speaking inhabitants, who had suffered policies of discrimination and Italianization during the fascist regime. The article analyzes the political dynamics that characterized South Tyrol during the election, tracing the political offer and analyzing the election results in the province, in light of nationwide data and results in the previous 2018 election. The paper highlights the political vicissitudes and political climate that emerged in the province, comparing the context of the 2022 general election with the political dynamics that have characterized South Tyrol to date, and presents a reflection on the repercussions that the latest election might have on South Tyrolean politics.
