Abstract
Terminology work is a relevant aspect of language planning in minority languages, as it enables the practical implementation of language rights. This contribution deals with a local-only minority language, i.e. German in South Tyrol, Italy, where the need to develop terminology is mainly linked to the legal domain, due to the system-boundness of legal language. We first sketch the legal basis for minority protection in South Tyrol and the different approaches to terminology development over time. We then focus on recent efforts aimed at increasing the cooperation with terminology users through a dedicated consultancy service. We give an overview over theoretical aspects of ad hoc terminology work and a typological classification. Finally, we discuss the types that are most relevant for South Tyrol based on the analysis of real consultancies. The results show that most doubts concern the German language, suggesting that further terminology work is needed to continue supporting an effective implementation of language rights in South Tyrol.
