Abstract
To mark Eurac Research’s 30th anniversary, the authors have identified key moments, challenges and future perspectives for the South-Tyrolean research institution by conducting 14 semi-structured interviews with the key figures, who actively shaped and experienced the emergence of Eurac Research. This contribution will provide a comprehensive overview of the historical development of the institution, distinguishing both the “Pioneer-” and “Differentiation” phases of the organization, while at the same time, allowing an insight into the lived experiences of some of its founders and key figures. The analysis, supported by GABEK®-WinRelan, provided the opportunity to focus on dynamic personal associations by analyzing relations, rather than rigid concepts, which seems more suitable for the examination of such a process of institutional development. Important for the analysis and the understanding of the institution’s development and role in the region – but also the wider European context – are its interaction with the regional scientific sector and local and European political structures. Highlighting such relationships and internal guidelines, the study concludes with challenges, chances and perspectives for the future.
