Abstract
The Free University of Bozen/Bolzano (unibz) was founded in 1997 as a “multilingual and internationally oriented institution for research and teaching” (Statute of unibz, Art. 2). It is one of the few consistently trilingual universities in Europe and the only one to offer a master’s degree (educational sciences for primary education) with four compulsory languages of instruction. This article deals with the different aspects of multilingualism of the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano and, in particular, of its Faculty of Educational
Sciences. These concern, on the one hand, the concrete application of multilingualism, and on the other hand, the challenges that arise in research and teaching, but also in the recruitment of students and teachers. Another aspect covered in the article is how the university demands and promotes multilingualism in the university community.
