Abstract
This chapter discusses the development and impact of a community music project in the peripheral district of Firmian in Bozen (Italy). The name of the project, ‘La banda di via Mozart’, recalls the name of the area in which it took place, highlighting the role of place in affecting life opportunities as well as collective identities. The project aimed first and foremost to positively bring together children and young people of different socio-cultural backgrounds, foster their mutual understanding, promote the acquisition and respect for rules of peaceful coexistence, and offer a reason for social cohesion. On a larger scale, it fostered the conviction that coexistence between children and young people from different social and cultural backgrounds can benefit from healthy aggregation through grassroots music-making activities. Many social indicators suggest that the project had a significant impact on the social well-being of the entire community.
