Abstract
In South Tyrol, German and Italian have equal status. Concerning legal and administrative terminology, two requirements have to be met: first, the legal concepts of the Italian legal system need to be translated into German, which is already used in three other legal systems, i.e. Austria, Germany, Switzerland; second, legal terminology must be clear, correct and consistent. The collaboration between the Institute of Applied Linguistics of Eurac Research and the Office for Language Issues of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano plays an important role in this respect. The main objectives of the cooperation are producing high-quality terminology, extending the existing bilingual terminology collections, disseminating correct, clear and consistent legal and administrative terminology in order to guarantee legal certainty. Against the background of the linguistic situation in South Tyrol, this article illustrates the terminological aspects and criteria on the basis of which the two aforementioned partners promote the harmonization of legal and administrative terminology in the region.
