Abstract
The intersection of participatory democracy and digitalization in Italy is a promising avenue for enhancing civic engagement and democratic practices at the local level. Leveraging digital tools underscores a commitment to fostering transparent, inclusive, and responsive governance. This chapter explores how Italian municipalities are embracing digital platforms to bridge the gap between citizens and institutions, enabling active participation in decision-making processes. Through the deployment of digital platforms and innovative methods like crowdsourcing and Urban Digital Twins, local governments are creating opportunities for citizens to voice their opinions, propose ideas, and contribute to policy development. However, challenges such as digital literacy, the digital divide, data privacy, and ethics must be addressed to ensure equitable participation. This study delves into three specific approaches to digital citizen engagement in Italian municipalities: Digital Participatory Platforms, innovative digital methods, and the use of Urban Digital Twins. It highlights the importance of balancing online and offline engagement, fostering partnerships for civic technologies, embracing multi-disciplinary approaches, and ensuring sustainability and civic impact. By examining diverse examples, this chapter aims to stimulate reflection on the integration of democratic procedures with digital tools in the context of local government.
