Abstract
Josef Rheinberger, in full Josef Gabriel Rheinberger, (1839–1901), was a German composer and teacher well known for his compositions for organ, rated as among the finest 19th-century organ works. What is not so well known is his output for choir, and more specifically his works for secular mixed a cappella choir. This publication
set out to provide an analysis of these compositions to show their merit as charming miniatures for mixed a cappella choir; works with sophistication and composed in the composer’s unique compositional style. Rheinberger’s individual, yet approachable, style is characterized by convincing handling of the choral medium. The secular songs for mixed a cappella choir by Josef Rheinberger are a useful contribution to the mixed choir repertoire and provide the conductor, searching for unknown, refreshing works to include in a programme, with a comprehensive choice.
