Vegetable crops are often associated with low nitrogen (N) use efficiencies and high N demand. The optimization of N by means of fertilization management, intercropping systems and crop residue recycling in crop successions can help to reduce N inputs and lead to less soil N losses.
In the first experiment (1) of this thesis, undertaken in a mountain agroecosystem, I tested the effect of both increasing N fertilizer rates and the presence/absence of a clover (Trifolium resupinatum L.) intercrop on cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis L.) growth, yield, and N uptake. In experiment 2, the effect of residual N left in the soil was observed by the incorporation of cauliflower and clover residues in year one, followed by two subsequent cycles of iceberg lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. capitata (L) Janchen) cultivated in the same field, in year two. Through the soil incorporation of 15N labelled cauliflower residues, the recovery of N derived from crop residues by lettuce was estimated.
Experiment 3 focused on cauliflower residues-N dynamics under controlled conditions. The 15N labelled cauliflower leaves and roots were incorporated in the soil, with or without of the N fertilizer and in the presence/absence of clover residues. The fate of N released from cauliflower residue was assessed on two consequent cycles of lettuce cultivated in a growth chamber.
Finally, experiment 4 followed the application of a split fertilization technique on cauliflower grown in succession to either field pea (Pisum sativum L.) or to a fallow. The amounts of N-fertilizer supplied were chosen considering the optimal N rates determined in experiment 1.
The presence of clover as a legume intercrop had a positive influence on the lettuce cultivated in succession rather than on intercropped cauliflower (experiments 1 and 2). Under no supply of N fertilizer, the clover competed against cauliflower for N absorption, while the addition of a relatively low N-fertilizer rate (75 kg N ha-1) maximized the growth and N uptake of the intercropped cauliflower (experiment 1). The incorporation of cauliflower and clover residues improved the lettuce marketable yields by 41% (+ 9 t ha-1) during the first cycle and by 21% (+ 5.5 t ha-1) during the second cycle (experiment 2). The highest lettuce yield (35.6 t ha-1) was recorded with the incorporation of residues from the intercropped species, which received 150 kg N ha-1 the preceding year. The lettuce crop cycles recovered 47% of the N contained in the cauliflower residues, corresponding to 60 kg N ha-1.
Under controlled conditions (experiment 3), the N contained in decomposing cauliflower leaves (approx.150 kg N ha-1) contributed to the growth and N nutritional needs of lettuce similar to a standard N fertilizer rate (100 kg N ha-1). The lettuce recovered almost the 50% (75 kg N ha-1) of the total N contained in cauliflower leaves and 32% (3 kg N ha-1) of the N from cauliflower roots. The incorporation of clover residues enhanced the N-recovery from cauliflower residues in the long term (+22%) but caused some N immobilization by the microbial biomass soon after their incorporation.
During the experiment 4, the inclusion of cauliflower in a succession system with the pea crop and the application of a starter fertilizer (25 kg N ha-1) plus 50 kg N ha-1 of N split in two applications, maximized the yield of cauliflower (35 t ha-1). Plant growth and N uptake were also optimized when split fertilization regimes of 25 and 75 kg N ha-1 were applied on cauliflower cultivated after pea. Independently from the N fertilizer rate, when cauliflower was cropped on the pea field, its total biomass and N uptake was raised by +40% and 48%, respectively.
Results from this thesis show that the inclusion of legumes in intercropping systems and the residue management in vegetable rotation schemes, combined with the application of the split fertilization technique will potentially reduce the amount of N to be supplied to the crops and therefore contribute to a more environmentally-friendly management of N nutrition.
Le colture orticole sono spesso caratterizzate da una bassa efficienza d’uso dell’azoto (N) e, per contro, da elevati fabbisogni nutrizionali. Per limitare gli eccessivi apporti di fertilizzante azotato e le conseguenti perdite per lisciviazione, è necessario ottimizzare, quindi implementare, la nutrizione azotata tramite consociazioni, successioni e riutilizzo dei residui colturali. Nel seguente elaborato sono presentati quattro differenti esperimenti che pongono in relazione la coltivazione di colture orticole, in consociazione e/o successione colturale, e diverse fonti di apporto di N.

Nell’esperimento #1, condotto in ambiente montano, sì è testato l’effetto di dosi crescenti di fertilizzante azotato su crescita, resa e assorbimento di N in cavolfiore (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis L.) consociato con trifoglio (Trifolium resupinatum L.). L’effetto residuo delle due specie è stato testato l’anno successivo sulla produzione di due cicli colturali di lattuga Iceberg (Lactuca sativa var. capitata (L) Janchen) coltivata sullo stesso terreno (esperimento #2). Interrando i residui colturali di cavolfiore precedentemente marcati con un fertilizzante arricchito in 15N, è stato stimato il recupero (‘recovery’) di N derivante da residui di cavolfiore, da parte della lattuga.
L’esperimento #3 si focalizza sulle dinamiche di rilascio di N da residui di cavolfiore in condizioni controllate. Come nel caso precedente, le foglie e le radici di cavolfiore sono state marcate con fertilizzante arricchito in 15N e successivamente incorporate in vasi contenenti terreno, con l’aggiunta o meno di concime azotato o di residui colturali di trifoglio. La quantità di N rilasciata dai residui di cavolfiore, influenzata dalla presenza di fertilizzante o residui di trifoglio, è stata stimata su due cicli successivi di lattuga baby-leaf coltivati in camera di crescita.
Durante l’esperimento #4, è stata testata l’applicazione di una concimazione azotata frazionata su cavolfiore coltivato in successione a maggese o a pisello (Pisum sativum L.). Le dosi di N frazionate sono state scelte sulla base delle dosi ottimali osservate durante l’esperimento #1.
Dai dati ottenuti è stato possibile affermare che la presenza del trifoglio consociato ha prodotto effetti positivi sulla lattuga coltivata in successione, piuttosto che sul cavolfiore in consociazione (esperimenti #1 e #2). In assenza di fertilizzante azotato, il trifoglio ha mostrato effetti di competizione per l’assorbimento di N nei confronti del cavolfiore. Tuttavia, dosi di N relativamente basse (75 kg N ha-1) hanno massimizzato sia l’accumulo di sostanza secca che l’assorbimento di N da parte delle piante di cavolfiore consociato (esperimento #1). L’interramento dei residui colturali di cavolfiore e trifoglio ha significativamente incrementato le rese di lattuga del 41% (+ 9 t ha-1) durante il primo ciclo e del 21% (+5.5 t ha-1) durante il secondo (esperimento #2). Le rese più elevate di lattuga (35.6 t ha-1) si sono ottenute con l’incorporamento di residui delle specie consociate fertilizzate l’anno precedente con 150 kg N ha-1. La lattuga ha recuperato il 47% dell’azoto contenuto nei residui di cavolfiore, corrispondente a circa 60 kg N ha-1.
In camera di crescita (esperimento #3), l’azoto contenuto nelle foglie di cavolfiore (circa 150 kg N ha-1) ha contribuito al supporto della crescita e della nutrizione azotata della lattuga in maniera non differente da una dose standard di concime azotato. La lattuga ha recuperato circa il 50% (150 mg N per vaso) dell’azoto contenuto nelle foglie di cavolfiore e il 32% (6 mg N vaso) dell’azoto contenuto nelle radici. L’aggiunta dei residui di trifoglio ha incrementato la percentuale di recupero di N da residui di cavolfiore durante il secondo ciclo di lattuga (+22%), ma ha causato una temporanea immobilizzazione dell’azoto da parte della biomassa microbica del terreno, durante il primo ciclo.
Nell’esperimento #4, la produzione ottimale di corimbi (35 t ha-1) è stata registrata su cavolfiore coltivato in successione al pisello e concimato con 75 kg N ha-1 frazionati in tre applicazioni (25 kg N ha-1 al trapianto, più 50 kg N ha-1 distribuiti 35 e 55 giorni dopo il trapianto). I valori massimi di sostanza secca e di assorbimento di N da parte del cavolfiore sono stati osservati con dosi di N pari a 25 e 75 kg N ha-1. Indipendentemente dalle dosi di N somministrate, il cavolfiore coltivato in successione al pisello ha prodotto valori di biomassa totale e assorbimento di N più elevati del 40% e del 48%, rispettivamente, in confronto al cavolfiore coltivato dopo maggese.
Concludendo, i risultati contenuti in questa tesi indicano che l’inclusione di leguminose all’interno di sistemi di consociazione, la gestione dei residui colturali negli schemi di rotazione, in combinazione con il frazionamento delle concimazioni, contribuiscono a gestire in modo più sostenibile la nutrizione azotata delle colture orticole.

Gemüsekulturen sind oft durch niedrige Stickstoffnutzungseffizienz und hohen Stickstoffbedarf gekennzeichnet. Die Optimierung von Stickstoff (N) durch Düngungsmanagement, Zwischenfruchtanbau und Ernterückstände in Fruchtfolgen kann helfen, N-Einträge zu reduzieren und N-Verluste durch Auslaugung zu verringern.
Im 1. Versuch dieser Arbeit, die in einem Berg-Agrarökosystem durchgeführt wurde, wurde die Wirkung von steigenden N-Düngerraten sowie das Vorhandensein / Fehlen einer Kleeart (Trifolium resupinatum L.) auf das Wachstum, den Ertrag und die N-Aufnahme des Blumenkohls (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis L.) getestet. Im 2. Versuch wurde die Wirkung von verbleibendem N im Boden durch die Einarbeitung von Blumenkohl- und Kleerückständen im ersten Jahr beobachtet, gefolgt von zwei darauffolgenden Zyklen von Eisbergsalat (Lactuca sativa var. capitata (L) Janchen), der im folgenden Jahr in demselben Feld angebaut wurde. Zudem wurde durch die Einarbeitung von Blumenkohlrückständen in den Boden, welche zuvor mit einem 15N-angereicherten Düngemittel markiert wurden, die Rückgewinnung von Stickstoff, der aus Feldrückständen stammt, geschätzt.
Der 3. Versuch untersuchte die Dynamik der N-Freisetzung aus Blumenkohlrückständen unter kontrollierten Bedingungen. Wie im 2. Versuch, wurden die Blumenkohlblätter und –wurzeln mit 15N-angereichertem Düngemittel markiert und dann mit oder ohne Zusatz von N-Dünger und mit oder ohne Kleerückstände in den Boden eingearbeitet in Vasen gefüllt mit Boden eingebracht. Das Schicksal von aus Blumenkohlrückständen freigesetzten Stickstoffs, wurde an zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Zyklen eines in einer Wachstumskammer kultivierten baby-leaf Salat beurteilt. Der Einfluss von Dünger oder von Kleerückständen wurde zudem berücksichtigt.
Schließlich folgte der 4. Versuch mit der Anwendung einer geteilten Düngetechnik auf Blumenkohl, der entweder auf Felderbse (Pisum sativum L.) oder auf Brache in Fruchtfolge gezüchtet wurde. Die Mengen an N-Düngemitteln wurden auf Basis der optimalen N-Bereiche, die im 1. Experiment festgestellt wurden, ausgewählt.
Aus den Ergebnissen konnte gefolgert werden, dass das Vorhandensein des Klees positivere Wirkungen auf den in Folge gezüchteten Salat als auf den Blumenkohl in Mischkultur hatte (1. und 2. Versuch). In Abwesenheit von Stickstoffdüngung konkurrierte der Klee mit dem Blumenkohl um die Absorption von N. Relativ niedrige N-Rationen (75 kg N ha-1) maximierten jedoch sowohl die Akkumulation von Trockensubstanz als auch die Absorption von N durch die Blumenkohlpflanzen in Mischkultur (1. Versuch).
Durch die Einarbeitung von Blumenkohl- und Kleerückständen konnten die Erträge im Feldsalat um 41 % (+ 9 t ha-1) im ersten Zyklus und um 21 % (+ 5.5 t ha-1) im zweiten Zyklus signifikant gesteigert werden (2. Versuch). Die höchsten Erträge für Kopfsalat (35.6 t ha-1) wurden mit der Einarbeitung von Überresten des Blumenkohls, der im Vorjahr zusammen mit Klee gezüchtet wurde und 150 kg N ha-1 Düngung erhalten hatte, erzielt. Der Salat gewann 47 % des in Blumenkohlrückständen enthaltenen Stickstoffs zurück, was etwa 60 kg N ha-1 entspricht.
In der Wachstumskammer (3. Versuch) trug der in den Blumenkohlblättern enthaltene Stickstoff (etwa 150 kg N ha-1) wie eine Standarddosis Stickstoffdünger zur Unterstützung des Wachstums und der stickstoffhaltigen Ernährung des Kopfsalats bei. Der Salat hat etwa 50 % (150 mg N pro Vase) des in den Blumenkohlblättern enthaltenen Stickstoffs und 32 % (6 mg N pro Vase) des in den Wurzeln enthaltenen Stickstoffs gewonnen. Die Anwesenheit von Kleerückständen erhöhte die Rückgewinnungsrate von N aus Blumenkohlrückständen während des zweiten Salatzyklus (+ 22%); sie verursachte jedoch eine vorübergehende Immobilisierung von Stickstoff durch die mikrobielle Biomasse des Bodens während des ersten Zyklus.
Im 4. Versuch wurde die optimale Produktion von Corymben (35 t ha-1) an Blumenkohl gemessen, welcher in Fruchtfolge auf Erbse gezüchtet und mit 75 kg N ha-1 gedüngt wurde. Der Düngerzusatz wurde in drei Anwendungen fraktioniert: 25 kg N ha-1 bei Verpflanzung und 50 kg N ha-1 in zwei Anwendungen 35 und 55 Tage nach der Verpflanzung. Die Höchstwerte der Trockensubstanz und der Absorption von N durch Blumenkohl wurden mit beiden Düngungsrationen von 25 und 75 kg N ha-1 beobachtet. Unabhängig von der N-Düngerrate konnten 40 % bzw. 48 % höhere Biomasse- und N-Absorptionswerte gemessen werden, wenn Blumenkohl in Fruchtfolge mit der Erbse gezüchtet wurde.
Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit zeigen, dass die Einbeziehung von Leguminosen in Mischkulturen und das Rückstandsmanagement in Pflanzenrotationsverfahren, kombiniert mit der Anwendung der geteilten Düngetechnik, möglicherweise die Menge an Stickstoff reduzieren, die den Pflanzen zugeführt werden muss. Dies kann somit zu einem umweltfreundlicheren Management der N-Pflanzenernährung beitragen.
